The packaging for the Neil Young Archives, Volume 1 was designed as a time capsule of Young’s work and personal experiences from 1963 to 1972. The box includes multiple CDs, DVDs or Blu-ray discs, depending on the version, along with a replica of Young’s journal and a “stash” box. The outer packaging is printed with a newspaper background, mimicking Young’s journal, which contains numerous newspaper clippings. It also displays thick black lettering across each side of the package. When the boxes are placed next to each other on the shelf, they spell out “Neil Young.” Up against four other boxed or special edition packages at the 2010 Grammy Awards, the Neil Young Archives, Volume 1 package won a Grammy Award.
