UK retailer Tesco is encouraging shoppers to discard unwanted product packaging (produce trays, toothpaste cartons, etc.) at the checkout counter. The six-week pilot program is designed to cull consumer feedback on packaging, and to help the company pinpoint areas where its own packaging can be further reduced. Tesco says it will recycle the cast-off packaging, and reports that it currently diverts 87 percent of its in-store waste from landfills.
