Stonyfield opted not to mark its new corn-based plastic yogurt cups with the “7” recycling number, which is used as an “other” category identifier for a host of plastics, including those made from plants. The brand says that, because some #7 plastics contain substances like BPA or phthalates that Stonyfield customers and consumer groups are eying as potential toxins, it wanted to eliminate any confusion. Instead, the brand marked each cup (which, it should be noted, can’t be widely recycled under the current recycling infrastructure) with a “Made from Plants” message. The decision indicates an understanding that material health and safety are key drivers for the brand’s customers – do you know yours?
