When the Swedish retail chain Coop decided to create new packaging for its own-brand frozen berries, it deliberately chose a higher-priced base material for environmental reasons. Coop selected the paperboard material Invercote Bio, a virgin-fiber-based board coated with bioplastic for its new clamshell containers. The bioplastic makes the packaging compostable, and a special adhesive that performs well in cold environments was sought out. The berry package, which can also be used as a serving dish, was developed by printers Trosa Tryckeri in collaboration with the berry supplier Olle Svenssons Partiaffär. The package is designed to increase standout among the freezer section’s usual rectangular boxes.
