This Fungus Eats Plastic

A group of Yale University students has discovered a fungus that can “live and prosper” on a steady diet of polyurethane, according to the September issue of Applied and Environmental Biology. Even more encouraging, the microbe-dubbed Pestalotiopsis microspora-is believed to be capable of digesting polyurethane in the oxygen-free conditions it would encounter at the bottom of a landfill.
