UCB, a global biopharmaceutical leader, partnered with OXO, a consumer products company, to develop an easy-to-use prefilled syringe for adults with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or Crohn’s disease. After research determined that self-injection was a challenge for many people with RA, UCB and OXO brought in patients to assess syringes in the marketplace as well as the UCB prototype. The resulting prefilled syringes feature a soft, non-slip finger grip, rounded finger loop for easy needle cover removal, large and soft thumb pad for the plunger and a magnified barrel for a better visual of the medication. The packaging uses Velcro for easy opening and resealing along with large, easy-to-read directions and images to instruct patients how to remove the product from its packaging and administer it. Inside the box, a plastic, large finger recess enables easy removal of the syringe.
